# Manage payment methods

> Add a card, change the card on file, remove an old payment method, and clear a failed charge from the Squid ID billing card-issue banner.

Squid ID saves a card so you can top up in one click, run [auto-reload](/billing/auto-reload), and pay for add-ons. Manage cards under Settings → Billing.

Adding a card never charges you. It is saved with a Stripe SetupIntent.

## Add, change, or remove a card

    In the Payment methods panel, choose Add card and enter the card. It is saved without a charge.

    The default card is used for top-ups, auto-reload, and add-on subscriptions. Choose "Make default" on any saved card to switch.

    Choose the remove icon and confirm. If you remove the default card and another remains, the next one becomes the default; otherwise you are left with no card on file.

  With no card on file, you cannot top up, and auto-reload and add-ons cannot run. Matching pauses when your balance reaches \$0.

## When a charge fails

If a charge is declined, the card expires, or it needs authentication that cannot complete off-session, Squid ID records the problem and shows a red card-issue banner in the dashboard, plus a dunning email. Common reasons are declined, insufficient funds, expired card, and authentication required.

To clear it, add or set a working default card. The banner resolves on the next successful charge, and adding a new default card clears it without waiting.

  An expired card is flagged from its expiry date even before a charge is attempted, so you get a heads-up early.
